Since our firm, Sustainable Business Consulting (SBC), came to be more than ten years ago, individuals have come to us for help incorporating sustainable practices throughout their businesses. A few years ago, though, we started to hear requests for help in a slightly different area.
Our CEO Kevin Wilhelm began teaching about sustainable business practices at local universities and giving guest lectures at a variety of places – from radio shows and college classrooms to community forums and corporate conferences – and we began to hear from a lot of people wanting to get jobs in the sustainability industry.
Now, our office regularly gets hundreds of phone calls, emails and connect requests asking if we can help them get their dream job: a job in sustainability that pays well and aligns with their values. These are just some of the requests we hear:
• “Where can I go online to find sustainability job boards?”
• “Do you know the hiring manager at [insert green company here]?”
• “What sort of job can I get with a sustainability certificate or degree?”
Sound familiar? People are increasingly drawn to careers in which they can do well and do good at the same time, but they don’t know where to start.
Although we love to talk to everyone – and we try! – it became too difficult to give everyone the time and resources they needed to get them started on the sustainability job path. So we teamed up with the International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP) to offer “How to Get a Job in Sustainability,” a short online course highlighting the best practices in finding and landing a job that not only is financially rewarding, but is aligned with your values.
The course can be accessed online and includes just under an hour of video content and helpful worksheets that guide you through:
• Career planning – Nail down what you’re looking for in your next job.
• Positioning in the job market – Learn ways to tell potential employers about your “green” skill set.
• Job search tips – Find out how to narrow the search to find that dream job.
• The resume – See how to format and what to say to land you the interview.
• Places to gain experience – Find ways to gain specific skills that will help you break into the sustainability sector
• Networking – Hear best practices to help grow your network and get connected to key people in sustainability
• The interview – Check out cheat sheets and best practices to wow potential employers
How to get a job in sustainability is open to anyone – even if you aren’t a member of ISSP – and can be found here.
We hope “How to Get a Job in Sustainability” will help you search, find, network, interview and land that dream job. Have advice or want advice? Comment below – we’d love to hear from you.
